City Council Tows

If you parked your car on the roadside, and it's been towed from where you left it, chances are Wellington City Council Parking Services were involved.

If you think you've been towed, there's a possibility that we didn't do it

If you come back to the roadside spot where you parked your vehicle, only to find it gone, your car may have been towed for one of a number of reasons.

If your car was relocated to make way for roadworks or other roadside work that would have risked damage to your vehicle, or was illegally parked in one way or another, Wellington City Council Parking Services will have been required to attend with one of their Parking Wardens to authorise the tow. Some traffic management or roadworking companies have their own qualified Parking Wardens on staff, to make this authorisation.

In all cases, vehicles towed with City Council involvement are rarely taken to a tow company's storage yard, and are instead relocated to a roadside nearby.

I'm confident my car's been towed, what do I do next?

The first thing to do is confirm that your car has definitely been towed, and that nothing worse has happened.

Wellington City Council's call centre can be contacted on (04) 499 4444. If your vehicle has been towed with their involvement, they will have a log of where your car was taken to. When your car is towed for the City Council, you will not need to make any payment to retrieve your vehicle. Instead, you will have a ticket attached, usually on the windscreen, which you can pay at a later date.

Cars towed for the City Council are left roadside, in a legal council-controlled parking space, so you can collect the vehicle at your leisure. Please be mindful that while the vehicles are left locked by our drivers, these locations are not otherwise secured or patrolled, and leaving your vehicle in them is at your own risk, in the same manner as if it were parked on any other city street.

If City Council are unable to locate your vehicle, your next call should be to 105, the Police non-emergency line. All vehicle tows are logged with the Police, whether they be towed by WCC or from private land. At this point, if nobody can locate your vehicle, chances are it has not been towed, but removed by other means. The Police will help you with any required next steps.
